Sony WH-1000XM6 Review: Still the Noise-Canceling Headphones to Beat?

Sony's WH-1000X series has been the default recommendation for travelers and commuters for years. With the WH-1000XM6, Sony promises incremental but meaningful improvements across noise cancellation, call quality and battery life rather than a dramatic redesign.

What's New

The WH-1000XM6 keeps the familiar oval earcup shape and plush padding, but Sony has refined the headband padding and reduced the overall weight slightly. The ear cushions use a softer memory foam that seals better around glasses, a small but important upgrade for many users.

Noise cancellation is noticeably stronger in the mid-range, which is where office chatter and cabin noise live. Sony's new V2 processor handles multiple microphones more intelligently, adapting faster as you move between environments.

Sound Quality

Sound signature remains warm and forgiving. Bass is punchy without overwhelming vocals, and the mid-range is clear enough for podcasts and acoustic music. The companion app still offers a graphic equalizer, spatial audio support and custom sound profiles.

Comfort and Fit

The headphones remain comfortable for long sessions. Clamping force is moderate, and the earcups are large enough for most ears. The improved headband distributes weight more evenly than the previous model, reducing the hot spot that appeared after several hours.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is not a revolutionary upgrade, but it refines nearly everything that made the previous generation great. If you already own the XM5, the improvements are modest enough that an upgrade is optional.
